Hungary signs Visa Waiver Program MOU

Dear Members and Friends of the Hungarian American Coalition,

After 18 months of difficult and at times, what felt like an endless effort, we're pleased to see that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between the United States and Hungary. This progress is primarily being realized because of the leadership of Ambassadors Foley in Budapest and Somogyi in Washington. Ambassador Foley has worked tirelessly since arriving in Budapest in 2006 and Ambassador Somogyi since the fall of 2007. Their leadership has been crucial. I thank them both.

Mikulas Day - Merging Hungarian American Holiday Traditions

How have Hungarian Americans managed to successfully combine the different Hungarian and American traditions of Christmas?

For example, in Hungary, Mikulas Bacsi comes on December 6th and Baby Jesus and the angels bring the tree and presents on Christmas Eve. How have bi-cultural families woven these traditions together with Christmas stockings and Santa and the reindeer?

Please share examples of your family traditions. Happy Mikulas Day!

1956...51 Years Later

Fifty one years later, the interpretation of the meaning of the 1956 Revolution remains divided among party lines in Hungary. At the highest levels of political office, there was a claim made that 1956 was about reforming communism from inside the party, not an armed Revolution. Though many do not agree with this claim, the perspectives about 1956 are colored.

It is up to Hungarian Americans, and other Hungarians who live outside Hungary, especially those who participated in 1956, to commemorate, celebrate and honor 1956 with the kind of attention and perspective it deserves.
